Ben Ryan’s two year-old son, Sol, was born with a blood clot in his arm.

Following amputation, the medical advice was to wait until Sol’s third birthday before fitting a prosthetic that grabs. But former psychology teacher Ben saw the developmental benefit of acting much sooner...

In this astonishing interview with Olly, he recalls his rollercoaster of emotions when Sol was born; the sponge ‘arm’ he initially bodged together with cotton wool and Micropore tape; and how he learned to use 3D printing and CAD software to help Sol and other children around the world.

LISTEN NOW:

Ben’s business, Ambionics, involves parents in early rehabilitation and ultimately aims to develop printable hydraulic arms for babies at low clinical cost. He’s a finalist in the 2018 Nesta Inventor Prize, and is currently seeking more funding.

Meanwhile, in this week’s Zeitgeist, Ollie Peart investigates the real meaning of his SMS exchanges with Olly, using ‘texting relationship analyzer’ app Crushh; tests out Sandow's fizzy cold brew coffee; and explores the trend for ‘fashion drops’. If you have a challenge for Ollie to try for our next season, reach out via our Feedback form.

6/10 - The Truth About Clean Eating

‘Any health claims connected to coconut oil have no basis in fact’

Are you doing 'Dry January'? Experimenting with gluten-free snacks? Or stocking up on 'superfoods'?

If so, Anthony Warner warns, you are, in fact, building up a damaging relationship with food, and should probably stop it, now...

In this insightful interview with Olly, he takes on the bad science of the 'clean eating' movement, explains the reality of 'anti-oxidant' blueberries, and will make you think twice before you ever cook in coconut oil again.

LISTEN:

Elsewhere in our season finale, Ollie Peart - the man who predicted we’d all be wearing flared velvet by now - predicts the year ahead in this week's Zeitgeist: from metallic hair to Bitmoji, taking in backwards-looking technology and the threat of increasing earthquakes along the way.

And, down the Foxhole, Alix Fox - dismayed yet galvanised by a recent set of STI statistics - is on hand to advise a listener who wants to explore whether her husband should find sexual salvation with a transexual woman. (The Foxhole is sponsored, as ever, by our friends at mycondom.com - head on down now to their JANUARY SALE - and get 15% OFF when you use our discount code, Foxhole.)

1/8 - Gambling Nearly Killed Me

'I lost £2,500 in one afternoon'

What was your first bet? £1 on the National Lottery? A tenner on the Grand National? Matt Zarb-Cousin remembers his - because it lead to a cycle of addiction that saw him flutter away over £10,000 in the bookies before his 20th birthday.

In this episode, he joins OIly to tell his story, frankly confronting the nature of addiction, the changing face of the British high street and how a life can fall apart when the stakes are raised.

DOWNLOAD IT NOW:

If you agree with Matt that fixed odds betting terminals should be limited to £2 a spin, you can find out more about his Stop The FOBTs campaign at The Campaign For Fairer Gambling.

Meanwhile, Ollie Peart is, like everyone else, contemplating the return of Serial. Can the new season possibly compete with the first; the most successful podcast of all time? Also in The Zeitgeist this week, the Disneyfication of The BFG, the 'science' of full stops, and the ever-decreasing age of the computer hacker.

And, in our weekly trip down The Foxhole, Alix Fox investigates the world of 'forniture' (that's furniture you can sleep with, folks), and assists a listener who wants to climax at the same time as his partner, with the aid of a new masturbator for men who suffer from premature ejaculation. If you've got a question of sex for Alix, or anything you'd like to say about the show, just fill in our feedback form

Thanks so much to everyone who has contributed beer money to help support the show - we really, really appreciate it. Even if you can't afford to send us cold hard cash, please take the time to write us a review on iTunes or tell your friends on Twitter using the hashtag #modernmann. Thanks.
